Experts doubtful over Briton's AIDS claim

South African AIDS experts have expressed scepticism over a UK man's claim that he has been cured of HIV/AIDS.

Andrew Stimpson, who tested positive for HIV in 2002, told the BBC that when he was tested again in 2003, he had inexplicably rid himself of the HI virus.

However, South Africa's medical fraternity are convinced Stimpson's case was more likely to be one of erroneous test results.

Dr Gert van Zyl of the Tygerberg Hospital in Cape Town was quoted by Die Burger, a local newspaper, as saying, "In such a case, one has to ask whether the virus was in fact cured or whether our tests are no longer picking it up."

Stimpson said he felt "special and blessed to have been cured" and was looking forward to working with doctors interested in researching his case.
