Plans to produce HIV test kits announced

    JOHANNESBURG
    After more than 10 years of research the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) says it is to produce a rapid HIV testing kit for local and regional markets. According to KEMRI director Davy Koech, the institute will embark on mass production of the Particle Agglutination kits through the manufacturing plant, which is expected to be completed in the capital, Nairobi, at the end of October. The kits could be available on the local market as early as November. The Nation newspaper quoted Koech as saying, "The HIV testing kit has a 99.9 percent sensitivity rate and is suitable for use in both rural and regional health facilities since it does not require refrigeration."
