Free anti-AIDS drugs for Christmas

    JOHANNESBURG

    The Zambian Ministry of Health says it has procured enough anti-AIDS drugs to treat 100,000 HIV-positive people by December.

    Health ministry spokesman Victor Mukonka told the Zambian News Agency that plans were underway for the establishment of additional treatment sites to support the increased rollout of antiretrovirals.

    The government recently announced that debt relief by the Group of Eight (G8) industrialised nations would allow it to use millions of dollars for providing free anti-AIDS drugs to HIV-positive people.

    Some 13,000 of the estimated 200,000 Zambians in urgent need of the life-prolonging drugs currently have access to them.
