HIV/AIDS fund-monitoring system implemented

Kenya's National AIDS Control Council (NACC) has launched the 'National Monitoring and Evaluation Network' to curb the theft of HIV/AIDS funds.

The new measure will enable the government to track funds disbursed to community-based organisations.

Mahboub Maalim, the Presidential Permanent Secretary in charge of Special Programmes, was quoted by the East African Standard newspaper as saying, "People have been questioning the expenditure of the AIDS money, but now the monitoring and evaluation system will answer them."

US ambassador to Kenya William Bellamy charged earlier this year that graft was a primary reason for only a fraction of the US $70 million allocated by his government to anti-AIDS programmes in Kenya last year being spent.
