AIDS to be highlighted at upcoming SADC summit

    JOHANNESBURG
    The regional impact of HIV/AIDS is to feature on the agenda of the upcoming 25th Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) Summit from 12 to 17 August in Botswana's capital, Gaborone. A local newspaper, The Reporter, quoted the SADC's executive secretary, Prega Ramsamy, as saying, "We want to continue combating the disease, so that our efforts to develop the SADC region do not fail. We are also planning a campaign of education to help prevent [HIV infection]. Although HIV/AIDS is considered a hindrance to security and development in Southern Africa, Ramsamy noted that "on average, in 2004 SADC region achieved a growth rate of 4.1 percent. This is an applauded achievement."
