Immigrants planning to stay in New Zealand for more than a year will soon be tested for HIV, the country's Department of Labour has announced.
Previously only immigrants staying for two years or more were tested, but Labour Department workforce deputy secretary Mary Anne Thompson said the tighter requirements were more in line with international standards.
According to local radio network, Newstalk ZB, students staying for more than six months will also be tested, while foreigners will be checked for other conditions considered to be a drain on the country's free healthcare system, such as hepatitis B, and liver and kidney function.
