Former US President Bill Clinton has launched an initiative to double the number of HIV-positive children receiving anti-AIDS drugs in Kenya.
An estimated 100,000 children are living with HIV/AIDS, but only 1,200 have access to antiretroviral (ARV) treatment. Clinton announced that his foundation would provide treatment to about 1,000 more of country's children, the Kaiser Foundation news service reported.
The Clinton Foundation programme is to provide paediatric formulations of the life-prolonging medication, bought at a discounted price through a partnership with the India-based generic drug firm, Cipla.
A year's supply of ARVs to treat 2,500 HIV-positive children in Rwanda will also be donated by the foundation.
