President renews commitment to combat AIDS in second term

    JOHANNESBURG
    Zambian President Levy Mwanawasa renewed his commitment to the fight against HIV/AIDS and corruption on Sunday, saying halting new HIV infections would be at the top of his agenda if he were re-elected as President in 2006. Agence France-Presse quoted Mwanawasa as saying, "I pray that I should leave an HIV-free Zambia when I finish my term." Zambia has seen prevalence rates drop from 26 percent in the 1990s to a current 16 percent.
