WHO lauds G8 health boost

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has commended the Group of Eight (G8) industrialised nations for their commitment to health in Africa.

At the end of their recent annual meeting, G8 leaders agreed on aid for Africa amounting to US $25 million per year, as well as proposals on international trade, broader access to anti-AIDS treatment and debt cancellation.

WHO Director-General Dr LEE Jong-Wook said: "We already know that treatment can turn a fatal disease into a chronic condition, and we have demonstrated this works in resource poor countries."

He noted in a statement that the G8 decision had the potential to forever change the lives of millions of Africans.
