Anti-AIDS strategies must continue during vaccine search - expert

Pioneering AIDS researcher Prof Robert Gallo says the search for an HIV vaccine should not detract from existing anti-AIDS strategies. He was hopeful that an effective vaccine would be available within a decade if recent progress in medical research was sustained. The Irish Times newspaper quoted Gallo as saying: "Yes, there will be more vaccine candidates going forward - we are getting interesting results in monkeys right now ... But don't get overly excited. Roughly three years from now, I would be able to give a very good estimate that it's very likely we are going to have a breakthrough." Meanwhile, authorities have been urged to maintain a focus on AIDS education, good diagnostic blood testing and other preventive measures.
