International NGO revamps its AIDS fight

ActionAid, a global development NGO, has launched a worldwide drive to revamp its fight against HIV/AIDS. According to the organisation's international chief executive, Ramesh Singh, the initiative aims to ensure that funds earmarked for AIDS programmes actually benefit the intended recipients, and gather data on the disease in Africa. Singh was quoted by Agence France-Presse as saying: "An essential part of this drive is to make the money work - ensuring that the increasing global resources for AIDS actually result in tangible benefits for those in whose name the money is raised." Data collected on the pandemic in Africa will be presented to the Group of Eight developed nations meeting in Scotland in July.
