African poverty alleviation and global HIV/AIDS care are to feature prominently during the UK's presidency this year of the 'Group of Eight' (G8) most industrialised nations.
According to a timetable launched on Wednesday, within five years British Prime Minister Tony Blair aims to help a billion people out of poverty, and provide antiretroviral treatment to an additional 40 million who are HIV-positive.
The Mirror, a UK newspaper, reported that Blair's Labour Party would also call for "more radical reform of the UN humanitarian system, so it is better equipped to save lives".
Labour's manifesto will make key pledges to developing countries, including that all children go to school; free health care for all; the poorest countries get 100 percent debt relief; and millions gain access to treatment for tuberculosis and malaria.
