HIV/AIDS is fuelling the rise of tuberculosis (TB) in southwestern Kenya's Nyanza province, the area's health department has said.
With an estimated 19,000 TB cases, up from 17,000 in 2003, Nyanza had the second highest incidence after the capital, Nairobi, according to provincial medical officer James Gesame.
Noting his concern over the upsurge in the number of infections, Gesame stressed the importance early of TB treatment.
The local Standard newspaper quoted Gesame as saying: "We have enough drugs for tuberculosis; let those suffering from the disease seek medical attention."
