Trucker urged to use spouses against AIDS

A Zimbabwean Christian anti-AIDS organisation has recommended that truck drivers travel with their spouses in order to minimise the risk of HIV infection. According to Family AIDS Caring Trust (FACT), drivers on long absences from their wives often take sexual partners at various transit points. FACT spokeswoman, Bertha Chingove, said the prevalence of sexually transmitted illnesses and HIV/AIDS among long-distance drivers was a result of this risky behaviour. Zimbabwe's Herald newspaper quoted Chingove as saying: "We would like to lobby the government to make it mandatory for transport companies to allow their workers to move around with their spouses. This is meant to protect their workers and also ensure that their families remain happy and united."
