Slow business action on HIV/AIDS - survey

Kenyan businesses are doing little to tackle HIV/AIDS, despite being aware of the impact of the pandemic on their bottom line, according to international auditors PricewaterhouseCoopers (PWC).

Although some companies had developed policies to deal with the epidemic, these efforts have had minimal effect.

Reuters quoted PWC country director Charles Muchene as saying: "On average, most companies are not taking any serious action ... serious talk about the impact of HIV/AIDS on businesses is yet to get to the boardroom."

Local corporate leaders said they found it difficult to convince their boards to spend more money on fighting the disease, given that the boards were primarily interested in projects that would grow the business.
