Effective vaccines against HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria will not be developed for another 15 years, scientists said at the close of a landmark conference on Thursday in Nairobi, Kenya.
Delegates noted a funding shortfall for international vaccine research, and urged governments to invest more in university students studying biology.
According to the Africa Genome Education Institute (AGEI), who organised the gathering, the complexity of the HI virus itself presented an obstacle in vaccine research.
"HIV is an intractable virus, while tuberculosis and malaria pose formidable challenges. Scientific drive continues, but deliveries are - as in the nature of fundamental research - uncertain," a local newspaper, the Daily Nation, quoted AGEI interim director Wilmot James as saying.
