AIDS takes centre stage at landmark conference

More than 100 international experts are gathered in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi, to discuss ways of managing diseases such as HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria in Africa. But with AIDS taking centre stage at the third 'Africa Genome Education Institute Conference', researchers have found themselves at loggerheads on how best to tackle its spread. According to the South African Broadcasting Corporation, virologist David Baltimore, a Nobel laureate, drew criticism from fellow scientists with his suggestion that a treatment used for bone marrow cancer be replicated to fight the HI virus. However, the delegates agreed that African states could do well to invest more in science and technology aimed at ameliorating the impact of the continent's killer diseases.
