A successful HIV vaccine would only be available in about 10 years from now, a senior UN official has said.
According to Marie-Paule Kieny, director of the World Health Organisation's (WHO) Initiative for Vaccine Research, the search for a vaccine was still at the stage where "we are testing concepts on what may or may not protect against HIV".
"This means the research will continue for the medium term at least. We can only say that it is very unlikely that an HIV vaccine will be available in less than five years," Kieny told Inter Press Service.
