Majority of companies lack AIDS policies

    JOHANNESBURG

    Although Uganda has been hailed as a torch bearer in the fight against HIV/AIDS, most businesses still lack relevant policies.

    According to a new report, jointly published by the Global Health Initiative of the World Economic Forum, the Harvard School of Public Health and UNAIDS, only 11 percent of the country's businesses have AIDS-specific policies in place.

    The '2005 Business and HIV/AIDS: Commitment and Action' study found that while 63 percent of business leaders in Uganda believed the pandemic had or would have a serious impact on their operations, no steps were being taken to address the problem.

    Uganda has won international acclaim for reducing its national HIV infection rate from around 30 percent in the early 1990s to 6.2 percent at present.
