The World Health Organisation (WHO) has awarded US $1 million to the Collaborative Fund for HIV Treatment Preparedness, a global consortium, to help prepare HIV-positive people for treatment.
Defined at the 2003 International Treatment Preparedness Summit in Cape Town, South Africa, the concept of treatment preparedness was based on examples of activists preparing for their own treatment.
WHO director-general Lee Jong-wook said people with access to drugs needed to be informed about treatment, and how and when to take their medicines, while those without access needed the knowledge to participate actively in urging their governments to scale up treatment.
"People living with HIV/AIDS need to know about antiretrovirals," Lee said in a statement.
