A new grant of US $370 million, announced earlier this week by Richard Feachem, executive director of the Global AIDS Fund, will help Uganda tackle HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis (TB) over the next three years.
During a meeting with Ugandan Health Minister Jim Muhwezi, Feachem hailed Uganda as one of the few African countries that had made a mark in the fight against HIV/AIDS.
A local newspaper, New Vision, quoted him as saying: "The leadership of President Yoweri Museveni, and the outstanding track record in fighting the worsening state of AIDS in Africa, have endeared Uganda to the world."
Research shows that over the last decade Uganda has reduced its HIV infection rate from about 14 percent to below 8 percent.
