WHO to miss AIDS target

    JOHANNESBURG

    The World Health Organisation (WHO) is unlikely to meet its target of having 3 million HIV-positive people in developing countries on anti-AIDS treatment by 2005.

    During a recent visit to Ottowa, Canada, WHO director-general Dr Lee Jong-wook said even if the target was not met within the projected timeframe, he did not expect to see the programme's momentum dissipate, nor would he characterise missing the target as a failure.

    WHO's '3 by 5' initiative was launched on World AIDS Day 2003.
