AIDS deaths outnumber malaria and TB

Kenya's Ministry of Health is concerned that HIV/AIDS has overtaken tuberculosis (TB) and malaria as the leading cause of deaths in the country, a local newspaper, The Nation reported. It is estimated that more than 100,000 people die annually of AIDS-related illnesses, while malaria claims 30,000 lives and TB 20,000. However, Health Minister Charity Ngilu said efforts to tackle the pandemic were bearing fruit, as the previous HIV prevalence rate of 13 percent had been reduced by more than half, and the daily number of people succumbing to AIDS-related illnesses had fallen from 700 to 300.
