Global Fund faces critical shortfall

    JOHANNESBURG

    Severe funding shortfalls could mean that the Global Fund will not be able to award new grants in 2005, executive director of the Fund Richard Feachem was reported as saying last week.

    "It would be a major loss of momentum for the world's new financing mechanism against AIDS, TB and malaria, and a betrayal of the vision and the trust and the hope that is placed in the Global Fund,"Reuters news agency quoted Feachem as saying.

    The Fund needs at least US $2.5 billion to carry out its work in 2005, up from US $1.5 billion this year, but so far has secured about US $1.6 billion.

    Feachem remained hopeful that "governments will dig deep to provide new funds," particularly after the Group of Eight meeting in July 2005 in Scotland, Reuters added.
