World leader in AIDS deaths - AU

    Africa has been hit harder by the HIV/AIDS pandemic than any other continent in the world, delegates to an African Union (AU) seminar in Nigeria heard on Wednesday.

    The AU representative for Nigeria, Grace Kalimugogo, told the gathering that Africans accounted for the majority of global AIDS deaths annually.

    According to the News Agency of Nigeria, Kalimugogo noted that the feminisation of AIDS was also more apparent on the continent and traced the situation to gender inequality and sexual violence.

    The UN estimates that some 26 million people in Africa are living with HIV/AIDS, and 2.2 million have already died of AIDS-related illnesses.
