South Africa's Western Cape province has received US $70 million from the Global AIDS Fund to provide people in need of antiretrovirals with free medication by the end of next year.
A local newspaper, The Cape Argus, quoted Provincial AIDS programme manager Dr Fareed Abdullah as saying: "This new funding means an estimated 12,000 people who need drugs can be treated."
Abdullah said this was the first unconditional grant the Global Fund had ever awarded.
Only 5,000 HIV-positive people in the Western Cape currently have access to free drugs.
