Modern AIDS treatment and training centre opens

    JOHANNESBURG

    One of East Africa's biggest medical and training facilities for HIV/AIDS has opened in Uganda's capital, Kampala.

    The Infectious Diseases Institute, funded mainly by drug company Pfizer, will offer state-of-the-art training to 200 doctors a year and provide treatment for HIV/AIDS and other infectious diseases.

    The Associated Press quoted the facility's director, Dr Keith McAdam, as saying: "The institute will help in training people how to manage and handle [antiretroviral] drugs. It will train experts to handle people living with AIDS, to care about AIDS patients, prevention of infection and how to best treat people."

    The institute will be able to provide treatment to as many as 300 HIV-positive people daily.
