Free AIDS prevention recalled over quality

    JOHANNESBURG

    Uganda's National Drug Authority (NDA) has issued a statement on behalf of the Ministry of Health saying its free condom brand, Engabu, were found to be unsatisfactory, according to a local newspaper, The Monitor.

    Engabu, meaning shield, is a brand developed by the German Technical Corporation for western Uganda in 1991 as a measure to mitigate the spread of HIV/AIDS.

    The NDA statement read: "Following receipt of complaints about the quality of Engabu condoms ... it has become necessary for the Ministry of Health to recall those batches which have been distributed."

    Experts recently said the condoms were questionable as an effective prevention method against HIV and other sexually transmitted infections.
