New Canadian initiative to ease HIV/AIDS

    JOHANNESBURG

    A major project launched by Canada's Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union aims to ease the impact of HIV/AIDS in Africa.

    During its 6th National Convention this week, the union announced plans to raise US $500,000 for HIV/AIDS relief on the continent.

    According to a CEP statement, the money will be channelled through the union's Humanity Fund, which is supported by a payroll deduction of one cent per hour.

    CEP administrative vice-president Joseph Gargiso said, "This is not charity, it is solidarity - 6,000 people a day are dying in Africa and we have the means to make a difference."
