In response to an appeal from former South African president Nelson Mandela, the Dutch government has followed Sweden's lead and pledged US $6 million to the Global AIDS Fund.
The director of the Dutch government's UN and International Financial Institutions Department, Karel van Kesteren, said, "I hope this advance disbursement, together with additional payments from other donors, will help address the needs the Global Fund faces in 2004 and 2005."
The Fund said in a statement that the additional money would bring contributions by the Netherlands through 2005 up to $161 million.
Mandela, backed by Irish rock star Bono, trade and AIDS advocacy group DATA, and Motion Picture Association of America president Jack Valenti, recently urged 10 countries to donate $5.3 million each to make up the Global Fund's monetary shortfall.
