President's new attack on condoms in AIDS battle

    JOHANNESBURG

    Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has again cautioned the public against condoms in tackling sexually transmitted infections (STI's) like HIV/AIDS.

    During recent independence day celebrations the president said condoms were not effective in preventing certain infections and urged people to follow the country's model of abstinence and faithfulness instead.

    Uganda has won international acclaim for reducing its prevalence rates from 30 to 6 percent, using the 'Abstain, Be faithful and Condomise', also known as the 'ABC' approach.

    A local newspaper, New Vision, quoted Museveni as saying: "This condomisation they are talking about is a recipe for disaster."
