Japan to increase AIDS funding

    JOHANNESBURG

    Zambia has been included in Japan's increased budgetary allocation for African countries hard-hit by HIV/AIDS.

    The cumulative total amount of JICA's allocation to Zambia is US $340 million, the third highest amount given to an African country after Kenya and Tanzania, a local newspaper, The Times of Zambia, reported.

    Vice president of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Kazuhisa Matsuoka noted that the pandemic had retarded the continent's growth and the increased contribution from the current 15 percent to 17 percent would be important in helping African states to tackle AIDS.
