Donated AIDS drugs plug gap while local production is planned

    JOHANNESBURG

    Anti-AIDS drugs recently donated by Brazil will bring temporary relief to people living with HIV/AIDS in Gabon.

    The donation follows a pledge by Brazilian President Luis Inacio Lula Da Silva during his visit to the central African country in July last year.

    Gabon's Health Minister, Faustin Boukoubihe, was quoted by the Pan African News Agency as saying, "Thanks to these drugs, a hundred people will be saved, at least for a while."

    Gabonese authorities are also discussing a transfer of technology from Brazil that will allow generic antiretrovirals to be manufactured in Gabon.
