Much-awaited AIDS survey ready to go

    JOHANNESBURG

    Uganda's assistant commissioner for national disease control, Dr Alex Opio, has announced that a long-awaited national HIV sero-behavioural survey will start in three weeks' time.

    The study will cost an estimated US $3 million and aims to collect accurate information on knowledge, attitudes, behaviours and practices related to HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections.

    The assistant commissioner said the survey would target 23,000 randomly selected people nationwide to provide information by means of interviews and blood samples.

    A local newspaper, New Vision, quoted Opio as saying, "The ultimate goal is to help government plan better for voluntary counselling and testing, prevention of mother-to-child transmission and antiretroviral therapy."
