Cash injection for Global AIDS Fund

    JOHANNESBURG

    The Global AIDS Fund has received pledges for new grants totalling US $102 million from the European Commission and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

    The $52 million from the European Union is part of a $569 million commitment for 2002-2006, said EU commissioner for development and humanitarian aid Poul Nielson.

    After the US, the European Union's head office is the second-largest single contributor to the fund.

    The new grant of $50 million by the foundation of software entrepreneur Bill Gates boosts its total donations to the Global Fund to $150 million to date.
