AIDS decline "success story" - UNAIDS

    JOHANNESBURG

    HIV/AIDS prevalence in Ethiopia's capital, Addis Ababa, has fallen by more than half from its peak of 24 percent in 1995 to 11 percent in 2003, according to UNAIDS.

    Michel Sidibe, UNAIDS country and regional department director in Geneva, hailed the decline as a "success story" in the fight against HIV/AIDS.

    "It is a significant development, given the country's epidemic being largely concentrated in its cities," Sidibe said.

    UNAIDS noted that prevalence had also dropped in several Kenyan cities and was stabilising in other countries as well, but warned that the disease was still spreading at an alarming rate in most African countries.
