The goal of placing 3 million people in the developing world on anti-AIDS treatment by the end of 2005 will not be reached, a leading expert has warned.
The '3 by 5' initiative is part of the effort by UNAIDS and the World Health Organisation to stem the spread of HIV by widening the availability of antiretroviral drugs.
However, the co-chair of the 15th International AIDS Conference in Bangkok, Professor Joep Lange, said he felt it was an inflated and unrealistic target.
"Just putting a number out and trying to get as many people on therapy as quickly as possible, without actually making sure the structures are there to support that, I think is not actually the most productive way forward," Lange told the BBC.
