Pregnant women to get better access to ARVs

    JOHANNESBURG

    By the end of this year, every district across Uganda will have a centre for prevention of mother-to-child HIV transmission, reports Ugandan newspaper, The New Vision.

    According to the programme coordinator for the prevention of mother-to-child HIV transmission centres, Dr Saul Onyango, pregnant women will have access to free HIV counseling and testing at the centres. Those that are HIV-positive will receive the drugs required to help prevent transmission of the virus to the baby.

    Onyango reportedly said that the expansion of the programme was urgently needed since only 16 percent of pregnant women were currently being reached at existing implementing sites.
