South African Health Minister Manto Tshabalala-Msimang has said the tendering process for awarding supply contracts to AIDS drug manufacturers will be completed by the end of August.
According to a local newspaper, Business Day, the Health Minister said the protracted process was necessary to ensure a sustainable supply of anti-AIDS drugs "at the best possible prices".
Meanwhile, provinces have been given special permission to procure their own interim supplies of the medication.
The tenders are an integral part of the government's plan, announced last November, to provide free antiretroviral drugs at public hospitals and clinics to people living with HIV/AIDS.
