South African AIDS activists have extended condolences and praise to a well-known political leader for publicly disclosing his son's AIDS-related death.
Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) leader Mangosuthu Buthelezi's 53-year-old son, Nelisuzulu Buthulezi, died of AIDS-related complications early last week.
The Treatment Action Campaign (TAC) said in a statement that while it did not share the politics of the IFP, it commended the courage demonstrated by Buthelezi and his family.
"Thus far, the openness and the reduction of stigma of HIV/AIDS has been disproportionately carried by poor, marginalised and vulnerable communities," the TAC said.
