Teen condom use backed by church

    JOHANNESBURG

    In an effort to control the spread of HIV/AIDS, the Church of Uganda has offered its support for condom use among the country's youth.

    Reverend Sam Ruteikira, director of the Church Human Services AIDS Programme, was quoted by a local newspaper, The Monitor, as saying: "Condoms have been in use for a long time, even before HIV/AIDS came - we should sensitise people about condoms for self-protection."

    He stressed that condom use should be taught from the age of 15 to help control the spread of HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases.

    Many religious leaders, especially in the Catholic Church, are opposed to the use of condoms and recommend abstinence instead.
