TASO to expand AIDS treatment programme

More people living with HIV/AIDS in Uganda are set to benefit from The AIDS Support Organisation's (TASO) free antiretroviral drug programme, a local newspaper, New Vision, reported. TASO director Dr Alex Coutinho said his organisation had been preparing for the expansion of its existing rollout programme, and was currently screening and testing likely recipients. He said only 1,500 of TASO's 30,000 patients were receiving anti-AIDS treatment. The visiting British State Secretary for International Development, Hilary Benn, commended Uganda for its leading role in the fight against HIV/AIDS, and urged donors to commit funds equally to all components of HIV/AIDS care.
