Illegal sales of free anti-AIDS drugs

    JOHANNESBURG

    A Ugandan nurse is facing charges of selling antiretroviral drugs that were meant for free distribution by the government.

    Assistant Inspector of Police Charles Maniraguha told a local newspaper, New Vision, that the drugs were being sold at a pharmacy owned by the nurse, Juliet Katabira, in the capital, Kampala.

    Maniraguha said: "Diflucan that had been donated to Uganda had been stolen from government stores and was on sale in town. So we moved in and got some of it at Mercy Pharmacy."

    It is believed that the pharmacy got the drugs from soldiers, who stole them from hospitals involved with the rollout of the government-subsidised drugs.
