An anti-AIDS group on the outskirts of South Africa's capital Pretoria has established a safe-sex project to help prevent HIV infection among gay men.
Research presented recently at the first African Congress on Sexual Health and Rights in Johannesburg suggested that the government was failing to adequately protect gay men from infection.
Toni Kruger, the sexual health officer for the group known as "Out", told the BBC the situation was fast reaching a level where "a lot of gay men are either absolutely terrified or in total denial."
Kruger said many failed to associate themselves with messages which only targeted heterosexuals.
