First instalment of AIDS millions due

    JOHANNESBURG

    Uganda could soon receive the first instalment of a recently approved US $97.6 million Global AIDS Fund grant to tackle HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria, the Health Services Commissioner, Dr KW Lwamafa, has said.

    During his recent update to the National Health Assembly on the Fund's progress in Uganda, Lwamafa said the country could soon receive $20 million. The total amount of the grant will be made available over a period of three years.

    According to local newspaper, New Vision, the commissioner also confirmed that an overall sum of $51.8 million would go towards tackling HIV/AIDS, with $10.6 million allocated to tuberculosis, and $35 million for malaria.

    The Fund, established in 2001 by UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, has committed over $1.5 billion in support of 154 programmes in 93 countries worldwide since its inception.
