UN envoy to brief AU leaders on upcoming Great Lakes conference

The UN Secretary-General's special representative for the Great Lakes Region, Ibrahima Fall, was in Maputo on Friday where he was due to meet with Mozambican President Joachim Chissano, the current chairman of the African Union (AU), Fall's office told IRIN. Fall is expected to brief Chissano on progress in the preparation of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region. From Maputo, Fall will travel to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, for a similar briefing the recently elected chairman of the AU Commission, Alpha Oumar Konare, a former president of Mali. Fall will discuss the strengthening of a partnership between his office and the AU, including the AU's input for a series of preparatory meetings leading to the main summit, especially with subregional organisations on the continent.
