Human Rights Conditions in Somalia (September 09, 2003)

    The UN’s Independent Expert on Human Rights, Dr Ghanim Alnajjar, made his third visit to Somalia in August and September 2003, to assess a variety of issues including the state of the judicial system, law enforcement, and prison conditions. On his return to Kenya, Dr Alnajjar briefed delegates at the Somali National Reconciliation Conference at Mbagathi, outside Nairobi, on his team’s objectives and findings. IRIN Radio spoke to Dr Alnajjar about his trip, and asked him to explain both the positive and negative aspects of the current human rights situation in Somalia.
