A one-day session in September is intended to galvanise support for Global AIDS Fund efforts in developing countries, UN Secretary General, Kofi Annan, has said.
Current pledges to the Fund were well short of the US $3 billion needed for projects in 2004, Annan said in a statement.
"HIV/AIDS is a non-conventional threat that we cannot afford to ignore. Even though Africa is the hardest hit, the disease is spreading very fast in Asia, Eastern Europe and the Caribbean. It is truly a global crisis," Annan said.
He urged attending world leaders to arrive a day early in order to focus on HIV/AIDS.
