2nd Pan-African Youth Conference on HIV/AIDS opens

    NAIROBI

    The second Pan-African Youth Conference on HIV/AIDS opened in Kigali on Thursday with young people from 40 African countries participating, the Rwanda News Agency (RNA) reported.

    Opening the six-day conference, Rwandan Minister for Youth, Sports and Culture Robert Bayigamba said the conference should allow young people to share their experiences and help them better respond to the HIV/AIDS pandemic, RNA reported.

    The conference was to be addressed on Friday by Prof Eugene Rourangwa, executive-director of the Great Lakes Initiative on HIV/AIDS, an organisation set up six years ago to help the governments of Burundi, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda coordinate their HIV/AIDS programmes.

    "Young people need information. They need to know what is happening in different countries," Rourangwa told PlusNews.

    "The Great Lakes Initiative covers gaps that are not traditionally covered by governments," he said. "We look at what is happening in mobile populations and migrants, among the displaced, among people who travel like truck drivers. I will explain this to the conference."
