New discovery raises AIDS vaccine hopes

    JOHANNESBURG

    A startling new finding could bring HIV/AIDS researchers a step closer to developing a vaccine, the BBC reported on Tuesday.

    Uganda's Virus Research Institute recently found that some two dozen locals were immune to HIV infection, despite having had unprotected sex with HIV-positive partners.

    Prof Andrew McMichael, a leading AIDS vaccine researcher from Oxford University, said the finding was encouraging.

    "It strengthens the case that the immune response can protect against infection. So, if you can make that immune response with a vaccine, you can protect people," McMichael said.

    The research is expected to be published later this year.
